Killingly Grange News for May

By Glenna Bruno

  MAY 2, 2013 --

We had a quorum for our March 4 & 18 meetings and this year Killingly Grange will dispense with the first four degrees as we are so short of members who are able to march around.

Repairs on the front entrance are done but repairs on the roof will at a later date.  Gert Blain and Denise Aubin attended the workshop in Glastonbury and the Quinebaug Pomona meeting in Feb.  We often have as guests State officers Tom Perry, Joan Perry and Debbie Perry.  We sang Happy Birthday to Pat Valys and Lecturer Eleanor read a birthday poem to her as our March 4 meeting.  Sister Eleanor gave a list of information about maple syrup and planting peas or “spring peas” which is best done on St. Patrick’s Day if you can dig up the ground.

One of our oldest members, Josephine Stenback, has donated a parcel of her property to the town for preservation and has been awarded the Killingly Conservation Award.  Our Secretary Gail has been on the sick list and the Treasurer Phil, her husband, has been her caregiver this month and were absent this meeting.

Lecturer Eleanor had four members give the sign of the order- Faith, Hope and Chairty, their meaning and definition.  Overseer read articles on the origin of the shamrock and potatoes which at one time were considered poisonous.  No wonder there was a potato famine in Ireland.  Everyone fled.

Watch for information on our Craft Fair on May 11.  Vendors are needed.  Contact Master Denise Aubin or Gert Blain for more information.  There will also be a bottle &  bake sale at the same time and a dance in the evening.  The last dance on March 9 almost didn’t happen as the musicians “almost forgot”.  Oh my!!

The Easter Hat Parade was short, consisting of the Chaplain Anne and Overseer Glenna.  No prizes were given but a fun time.  Last month we reported 204 community service hours.

May 6:  USA Cheers

May 11:  Craft Fair
