| AUGUST 3, 2014 -- Killingly Grange held elections with some changes. Secretary Julie accepted the office. Nancy Arena, Lady Assistant Steward and Assistant Steward was left open- filled by pro-tems. Glenna Bruno accepted CWA Chairman and moved up one on the Executive Committee to one year. As did Anne DuVal to 2 years and John Bennett on for 3 yrs. Installation is planned for September, but the date is not finalized as yet.
As of this writing, a picnic is planned for July 21 at Mashamoquet State Park in Pomfret Center. It is planned to be a potluck supper.
Our raised gardens and potted veggies are doing fine. Also all flowers planted previously by the Girl & Boy Scouts. We should have lots and lots of cucumbers, squash, tomatoes and peppers if all produced well. Because all were planted later than susual, we may not get produce until late September or the first of October.
This correspondent took some old eyes from old potatoes and planted them in a pot. So far I have a beautiful potato plant but don’t know what’s at the bottom of that plant. Will let you know the results in the fall. I’ve also planted a couple of tomato plants. One has a blossom coming and they look nice and green but doubt if I’ll get any fruit. Oh, well it’s worth a try. “Persevere” as we Grangers say.
Linda Haskins has been on the sick list for some time but as of late, reports are she is doing much better and feeling better. Hope to see you back at Grange soon Linda.
Our Silent Auction and dinner was a success thanks to Nancy Arena and the “Cooks” in the kitchen. We all learned how NOT to do things and how better to do things the next time. Thanks to all the businesses that provided the Grange with their products for the auction. It was fun.
Some of our members will be helping out at the Putnam Farmer’s Market as a community service. The State Food Inspector came this week and gave us a 90 out of 100 grade for cleanliness and neatness and whatever else they look for. Our Cook and Treasurer Pat Lewis was happy with that report.
We recently lost one of our older members John Zadora and his wife is now at a nursing home. Our Grange draped the charter for John. Rita and John were active in our Grange years ago. Our sympathy to the family. More news later. Have a cool, healthy summer.
