| JULY 9, 2011 -- The Woodbury FFA (For the Future of Agriculture) members at the Ellis Clark Regional Agriscience and Technology Program at Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury have partnered with the Bethlehem and Oxford Granges to help grow potatoes and butternut squash for the Connecticut Food Bank and its local affiliations. This is part of a state-wide program sponsored by the Connecticut Grange to help feed people in need this fall, and is part of the Woodbury FFA’s community service program.
Students in agriscience teacher and program director Bill Davenport’s Agricultural Production classes have been preparing the garden site at the high school and recently planted seven 100 foot rows of potatoes and several hills of butternut squash seeds for this project. Besides the seed potatoes and butternut squash seeds provided by the Grange, additional seed potatoes were donated by Dave Newell and CL Adams in Woodbury, and from Benedict’s Home and Garden in Monroe.
Several students will maintain the garden at Nonnewaug throughout the summer and Ag Production classes will harvest the produce in late August. |
