From The Historian's Desk
Looking back to 1981

By Edith Schoell, State Historian

  JULY 2, 2011 --

Doris Shaw of Tunxis Grange reported her entry in the sewing contest, a three piece suit for her husband, Don, placed second at the National Grange.  Many members sewed back then and the contest was a big thing at National.

The Rose Drill for the Sixth Degree had twenty girls participating, and there were thirteen Pomonas.

In the Journal of Proceedings for 1981, the General Deputy, Carlton Platt, reported Leaders Conference was held in Connecticut at the Tobacco Valley Inn.  They planned a warm welcome... the roof of the inn burned as everyone was arriving.  They ended up at Howard Johnson’s Conference Center in Windsor Locks.

Also, that was the year Deputy East, Russell Gray reported Ekonk Grange Hall burned, and a new hall was dedicated December 6, 1981.

It was a year of accomplishments and aversity.  Grangers usually come together, overcome obstacles and move forward.  What is your Grange doing?
