Around The Grange
Nonprofit status of many organizations revoked by IRS

By Amber Casey Bell, Controller, National Grange (New Grange - July/August 2011)

  AUGUST 17, 2011 --

On June 8, 2011, the IRS published a list of approximately 275,000 organizations whose tax-exempt status was automatically revoked because they failed to file an annual return or notice for three consecutive years (Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF or 990-N).

Many organizations that are still very much in existence, including Granges, have found their tax exempt status has been revoked. Many more are operating under the assumption their status is still active, but it is not.

The action came after the IRS warned for several years that it would be removing nonexistant or noncompliant organizations from its tax-emempt rolls as of 2011, but some organizations failed to heed the warning.

If you want to see if your Grange is on the revocation list, go to the IRS website, www.irs.gov, and click on Charities & Non-Profits, then click on Automatic Revocation of Exemption, and then click on Automatic Revocation of Exemption List. Once you get to this page you will have to select your state and then download the list by using the Acrobat Adobe or Microsoft Excel format.

The IRS wb site is a great source if you need further information, or you can call the IRS toll-free at 1-877-829-5500.

If you discover you have a problem, please contact your state Grange first.
