| APRIL 3, 2013 -- When someone mentions a nasty four-letter word what do you think of? As far as many of our Granges are concerned the worst four-letter word this year is SNOW. As I write this another snow storm is on its way and I know of Grange Halls that haven’t been plowed out from the blizzard yet. Many Granges have had to cancel a meeting or two. What do we do in the mean time?
Does your Grange participate in our “Should Auld Acquaintance” Project. There are a lot of things you can do for shut-ins and those in convalescent and rest homes. If your hall isn’t available or you don’t want to pay to turn the heat on at the hall gather at a members house and make tray and table favors for the residents. There are lots of ideas on line or you can get books and magazines at the library to get you started. Most of the time you won’t even have to buy any supplies. Our members seem to save everything and between them you can usually get everything you need. Or, you could get together and plan a program to present at the home. Call the recreation director of a local home and ask what you can do to help them. You will be surprised at just how happy they will be to talk to you and how enthusiastic they will be when you arrive with your favors or some entertainment.
It’s April so our flowers are starting to bloom. How about making May Baskets for the residents individually or a couple of big ones for the community areas of the home? You can use small jars and put spring material around them. Add a little oasis, water and the flowers. It’s a nice little project and gets your Grange some exposure in your Town.
“Should Auld Acquaintance” is listed as a Lecturers Project, but any member can be in charge. If you need help, just get in touch with me and I will do whatever I can to get you started in the right direction.
We have to keep active. We have to get everyone involved and keep the name of our Granges in front of the public. |
