| JANUARY 5, 2014 -- Many of you remember Carmen Brickner, right? I was just at a training seminar where she told a story from her early years as an accountant, where her boss’ boss asked her “Do you want to be RIGHT or SUCCESSFUL?”
Many of us can recall certain instances where we were right and it was important for everyone to know we were right, if for no other reason just to prove we were right.
We have some situations going on right now in our Grange and our country where all parties involved need to step back, take a deep breath and ask themselves, is it more important that we be right, or we be successful? In every case both parties are right. The reasons they claim to be holding firm to are correct and they all feel this is adequate justification for taking the actions they have taken. That is all well and good, but I do not think either party has truly taken into consideration who benefits from their stance or who ultimately will be “hurt”.
I urge everyone to analyze your position and determine if your being right outweighs the success and well being for a stronger, unified Grange.
On the Federal Government level we are going to see hard times in the Agricultural Industry if we do not reach a deal that will pass the Farm Bill. Again, the differing positions make each party right, but being right is going to be extremely detrimental to those who feed this country and the world.
It is time we separate SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) from the Farm Bill and pass a comprehensive bill that strengthens every aspect of Agriculture.
So I ask every member of Congress and the Senate: is allowing our farmers to have their livelihood be put in jeopardy worth your party can be right?
Not in the America I live in!
